Our focus on Anti-Racism

2/17/2020

Our anti-racism effort began on Martin Luther King Sunday with guest speaker William Dickerson, II who invited us to look deeply, at how we each are called to create racial and social justice.  Will is the Executive Director of the Brockton Interfaith Community and one of Brockton’s leading social justice advocates. You can hear his sermon on our SoundCloud channel.

The Social Justice anti-racism initiative will run until the end of March, except on March 22, when Monica Cannon Grant from Violence in Boston will talk about gun violence and gun control.

January through March we will have Brown Envelope collections during our Sunday offering for:
  • The National Black Doll Museum of History and Culture, Jan. 19- Feb. 23.  We are lucky to have the Black Doll Museum as our neighbor in Mansfield. The museum was created to tell the story of African Americans through the eyes of a doll collector and we are proud to be supporting their work.
  • The Road to Diversity and Understanding, Mar. 1- Mar. 29. "We are dedicated and committed to actively challenging racism and building cross-cultural understanding and friendship in the Norfolk and Bristol County area - and everywhere else we can reach!" We are happy to support this grassroots effort!
On most Sunday's during this initiative. one of our Social Justice Committee members will share a 2 minute presentation about their experience of and/or impressions about race/racism/anti-racism as part of our "Social Justice Minute" during Sunday service. After the service, anyone is invited to discuss the topic with the presenter.

What can we do to end hunger and Homelessness in Our Neighborhood?

"As the cold descends, we decorate our homes and apartments, making our hearts grow warmer. As the cold reminds us of our human need for warmth, we donate to charities to help our neighbors. We celebrate Love."
--Rev. Jim Robinson

For our social justice work for the holiday season, December 1st to January 12th, we have switched our focus to "Hunger and Homelessness in our Neighborhood". Our brown envelope collection during the Sunday offering will be for our own Five Points Cluster CommUnity Closet. This will allow us to buy essential items like toothpaste, socks, etc., which people can receive along with free clothing on the second Saturday of each month at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Brockton.

Our Christmas Eve collection will be for our area's main homeless shelter: MainSpring House in Brockton.

We also invite members to participate in the "Our Giving Tree" program which benefits children through West Side Benevolent Circle's Gift for Kids program and adults at Shattuck Hospital (our own gifting program inspired by a church member who works there).

We are also working with the Unitarian Church of Sharon to augment their hunger and homelessness relief programs through offering "Shopping for Justice" grocery cards. Five percent of the price of these grocery cards goes directly to this effort!

For more information about any of these programs email: uufoxborough.social.justice@gmail.com

"Because climate change is a truly global, complex problem with economic, social, political and moral ramifications, the solution will require both a globally-coordinated response (such as international policies and agreements between countries, a push to cleaner forms of energy) and local efforts on the city- and regional-level (for example, public transport upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, sustainable city planning, etc.).
It’s up to us what happens next."  -NASA

To kick off our effort on climate change.  Laura Wagner, MSW, Executive Director of UU Mass Action was the guest leader of our worship service on October 6th. Her sermon, "Creating Justice," can be found on our SoundCloud podcast.

Visit our information table after church during the month of November. Below are the resources and suggested action items  that we have highlighted:
  • Climate Crisis Primer - a resource that concisely explains some of the problems we are facing.
  • Comparison of climate impacts at 1.5°C, 2°C, 3°C and 4°C - this is the source of the graphics displayed at church.
  • Climate Changes Health - the impacts of climate change on our health.
  • Take Action - How you can help! Here you'll find links to local and national organizations working on the problem. Visit the information table during Friendship Hour (11 am, after Sunday worship) for more information.
  • For the month of October, our brown paper envelope collections were for  350.org. For November, we are collecting for Sunrise. Collections are made during the church offering.
For those pressed for time, become one of 350.orgs Ten Minute Heroes!
Ten Minute Heroes are people who are concerned about the climate crisis but have other commitments that keep them busy. With on occasional 10 minutes, at the right time, you can help tackle the climate crisis. You will receive emails with requests for quick action, when your input is critical.  A quick call, an email, a word to a friend--that’s all it may take. We'll try not to email you more than once a month—we know you're busy! But sometimes a burst of people power makes all the difference, and we can tell you when you're needed. To find out more and join, click here
